As you prepare for a new little one to join your family, a professional maternity session may end up at the bottom of your endless to do list. But think about it this way – by capturing this unforgettable moment in your life, a maternity shoot is the perfect time to remind you of the power and beauty of your pregnant body.

If you’ve never had a maternity photo session before, here’s some information on what to expect and how to prepare. Read on to find out everything you need to know in order to get the most out of your session and end up with images you’ll cherish for a lifetime.

Schedule Your Session Early

The earlier the better, especially if you have a specific photographer you want to work with. We suggest you book somewhere around 20 weeks.

Book Your Shoot To Fall Within Your Third Trimester

The best time to take your photos is between 28 and 32 weeks, when you have a well-defined bump that will look great in photos but you can still move around and pose without being uncomfortable.

Make Sure To Communicate With Your Photographer

Schedule a face-to-face meeting before your shoot so you can discuss what you’re comfortable with and help the photographer plan shots ahead of time. Describe the images that are important to you, and be just as clear about the images don’t want.

Pamper Yourself

Your hands will appear in almost all of your photos, so give yourself a little pampering with a professional manicure. You’ll also want your hair exactly right, so have a stylist create the perfect look to match how you want your photos to look.

Think About Hiring A Makeup Artist

Some photographers will include makeup and hair as part of their services, while others will leave it entirely up to you. Keep in mind, though, that a professional makeup artist will know exactly how to apply makeup, so you’ll look your most gorgeous in your maternity photos.

Get A Good Night’s Sleep

It’s hard to sleep well during pregnancy, but if you can, go to bed early and try to get a full night’s sleep. You’ll wake up refreshed and relaxed for your session.

Bring Items That Matter To Include In Your Photos

This will add special meaning to your photos, whether it’s an heirloom, a photo, or a favorite stuffed animal.

Make Sure To Wear Something That Makes You Feel Beautiful

Take time to choose outfits that fit and look the way you want them to look. Comfort is important, so go with stretchy fabrics. Keep colors neutral or jewel toned so you and your baby bump remain the focus. If other family members will be part of the photos, make sure that their clothes don’t clash with yours.

On Session Day:

  • Drink lots of water before and during your session to keep your skin dewy fresh and help maintain your energy level. Even if you’re nervous about being a photography model, also make sure to eat something before your session.
  • Apply non greasy lotion to any dry spots on your skin. Don’t use artificial tanners – orange is not attractive!
  • At least an hour before the session, remove any clothes with elastic that leave marks on your skin. Don’t forget about anything tight you normally wear on your wrists.
  • Bring the right underwear to the studio. One pair each of black, white, and nude panties and a strapless bra will cover all the bases.

Most of all, relax! Trust that your photographer will direct you through every pose. Your maternity session will be much more fun if you can chill out. Your only job will be to show up as your natural, lovely self.
